Chamber Music Hippos

Twice a year the Lenape Chamber Ensemble creates a delightful concert for children age 4-12 at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, PA, featuring world-class musicians performing short sections of the classical masterpieces – they play the full versions in their adult evening concerts. The musicians explain their instruments and themes in the music in simple terms for the children in a casual interactive concert. At the end the kids are invited to dance to the music – so fun to watch!

I’m commissioned to draw the flyers for the Children’s Concerts and chose hippos this time for my illustrated performers. I can imagine hippos behaving rather elegantly in evening dress, can’t you?

I highly recommend the concert for introducing young kids to great pieces of music – simple refreshments are provided at the end of the 1-hour concert and children can meet the musicians and see their instruments up close afterwards.  And you can’t beat the price – children $2, adults free! For further see their website or call (610) 294-9362.

Art in Progress for ‘Pirates of Penzance’

I’m buckling up the buccaneers for the Bucks County Gilbert & Sullivan Society‘s production of “The Pirates of Penzance” in June – here’s a detail of the panoply of characters in one of my all-time favorite shows –

I have yet to paint in the background and then plop it all into place with the information details below it.

This show is an operetta, which means it is mostly sung, but don’t let that put anyone off; it is a VERY funny show, in addition to having magnificent music. (And, my husband does a wonderful turn as the Major-General!) The cast of about 25 singers will be accompanied by the Bucks County Gilbert & Sullivan Orchestra, and the show performs Friday June 14 at 8 pm, Saturday June 15 at 2 and 8 pm and Sunday June 16 at 2 pm. The location is Delaware Valley University, 700 East Butler Avenue, Doylestown, in the Life Sciences Auditorium. Want to buy tickets early and save money over the price of tickets at the door? Poster Design for Doylestown Symphonic Winds

I am happy to once again promote a wonderful music organization, the Doylestown Symphonic Winds, who will perform their annual concert this Friday, July 22 at 7:30 pm. The group is celebrating 10 years of bringing the community outstanding music featuring the wind and brass instruments of the orchestra.  My husband and I attended last year’s concert and loved it – we are looking forward to this one too. The event is held in Delaware Valley University’s lovely new auditorium in the Life Sciences building, and, amazingly, the admission is no set ticket price, only a goodwill offering.dsw_10thann_poster_colorfinish2

It was great working with Robert Glatzer on the poster – a musician himself, he was able to give me important tips on some of those instruments in the silhouettes I drew – for instance, the bocal is important! (That’s the slightly bent mouthpiece on the english horn, fifth person from the right.) DSW also had me create some black/white ads and a program cover based on the poster, shown below.

I create advertising packages like this for other clients as well, so if your organization has design needs like this, feel free to email me.

Remember, the concert is this Friday, hope you can come!
