Hippo Piccolo Player sketch

Another addition to my portfolio pieces of animals parading: a hippo. Like pigs and elephants, they’re are fun to draw because of the movement of their bobbing body masses.  As he trundles along, this hippo will be playing what is probably the smallest instrument of a marching band, the piccolo.

While sketching his cap I first drew in a fat, wavy feather, but then I remembered a play I saw once at my local community theater, set in the 1940s, where one actress wore a pillbox-shaped hat with a razor-sharp feather straight up in the front – like an exclamation point.  It worked so well with the character, who was a frequently-appalled busybody.  The effect was hilarious, so I changed this feather to match.
